Art, Paint, and Mess Making

Mine and the kids' favorite day of the week is paint day! Every Friday I pull out the fancy paper, paint, smocks, and baby wipes for an explosion of sensory art. It's disgusting, messy, yet beautifully rewarding. One particular Friday, instead of fancy paper I decided to pull out the canvas I was saving.

Back story: A while back, I visited my parents and they have a Michaels craft store, which I absolutely LOVE and visit every time I'm in town.  Dot get me wrong, Hobby Lobby is great, but Michaels is the Mecca of craft stores. They have fantastic everyday prices and I bought a 10 pack of 8"x10" canvas for $12. Awesome right?

All right, enough back story. Anyways....I gave each of my students a canvas and poured cool colors into some containers. After letting them go ham for about 20 minutes, I had swirly masterpieces that I let dry and then covered with masking tape in various patterns.
After a refreshing nap time, I sat my kiddos back down at our table again (painting twice in one day!?) and gave them warm colors. I spent more time scrubbing paint off my table, chairs, children than planning. After they dried, I peeled off the tape and showed the kiddos their spectacular abstract art. Included in our fun day of fun was an age appropriate lesson of cool and warm colors and abstract painting!
